“Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law”

I was curious what commentary there might be around this saying and this statement was considered accurate or was from some point in the distant, irrelevant past (like the Old West, per se).

It looks like it is not so much about law but that, most times, the situation is such that it is likely easier to convince the third-party that the person currently in possession is the rightful owner.
